Action RPG-style game.

Game Idea:

The main hero is a priest warrior, he lives in a small village and always was in charge of security in that village. The game's setting is after the Middle Ages when magic still was around. The quest part of game events will happen in a planimetric 2D view, there will be some taverns and other buildings in the village where you can sell loot and buy some assets. Also, there you may get some quests. All dungeons with battles will be in 3D as in the tech demo. Different Bosses, monsters, chests with treasures will be in dungeons





Who am I?

Hi there, my name is Den, I'm from Ukraine and I'm an indie developer.  I decided to try my skills on Playdate. I have a few ideas for cool games. My idea is to make a few tech demos of my skill and describe ideas in those demos, then when I see community feedback on any of the demos I'll decide on which project will go first to the final release.

I started making games in 19xx, my first game was a clone of MK for ZX Spectrum (AWS/Mafia PC) I made code and a big part of the art and animations, it was released in 97, my art for zx there https://zxart.ee/rus/avtory/d/den1/ . I am skilled in pixel art and coding on different platforms, I'm also a game designer now. I was a Flash games developer (FunnyMonster/Monstrocat) in the past, then a HAXE/HTML5 developer lead in a few companies. Now I am PO/Game dis/game math dev in a big company, but I have a hobby of making small indie games and can't stop doing that.  I've started the CrankWork Games team to do that. The team is tiny now, but with your help, we can make good games and growth.

I want to create cool games for Playdate and I want to understand if is it interesting to the community too. The best way to show it is by donating or following me on itch.io , also comments

Controls - two modes in-game:

Crank control: (crank undocked)

Click the UP arrow   - to Shoot (in crank control more only!)

Arrows up / down  - HOLD it  to move forward and back

Arrows left/right - to move to the sides

Rotate Crank  - to turn

B - to shoot

Keys control only no Crank mode (Crank docked): 

Arrows up / down  to move forward and back

Arrows left/right to turn

B - to shoot

A - hold to  move to the sides with arrows


P.S. Sorry if my English is not the best, still learning it, as that is not my first language. (And I know about chat GPT, as the true old-school guy, I trying to write all by myself)

I've been really enjoying where this game is heading. I love the feel of the controls.

Making it run at half the resolution in version 0.14 was a good idea. It's much smoother now.

I'm excited to see what you add next.

the graphics are good but it lags.

also it needs some sort of story line or highscore so I feel like I want to play. maybe you could collect different weapons from different mob drops or chest loot?

Hello, the Game crashed after the start screen. I can't play it.

I tried the latest version without backlight. I think it's worth focusing on. The game is already more or less playable, FPS on average stays at 15. When approaching objects closely, such as a wall, barrels or grass, FPS drops to 5 for no apparent reason. There was also a decrease in the frame rate per second during shooting to 5. The new decor objects look appropriate, in general, I like the design

Hello good man! 
played the 131 demo and had a little fun. Frame drops to around 10 when facing enemies or those leaves in the ceiling. Movement and shooting is good and strangely, it feels like a true adventure. Cant wait to see it completed. :)

My only feedback for improvement is that double tapping up shoots and when operating the crank with the d pad, this means often I am shooting my mistake. But otherwise, quite nice :D

Hi there, I've added more objects to the game and a new level map. in v013. Also, 0.131 no-lights versions were added, comparing fps to 0.13

hi again, a few more optimizations come. two versions for comparison, with lights and no lights

I tried version 0.126, which is already more playable. Fps is kept at 15, sometimes falling in random places to 5-6. Approaching close to the trees, the fps drops to 5 always. With a large number of shots, it also decreases to 5. The character still moves quite slowly, the control of the handle still needs to be adjusted. It seems to me that you can try to reduce the size of the sprite of the shot, then you will be able to avoid FPS drops when shooting.

One more update. lower details in render and disabled light shading, try it again please

Okay, now we're getting somewhere. When just moving around it tops out around 12; which is still slow, but I move fast enough now where I can actually move around and do stuff. When there were two enemies on screen and I was firing at them it dipped to about 5. I also found a tree. The sensitivity on the crank needs to be dialed down a lot too.

hi. I have successfully launched your game on my playdate. I want to talk about the problems for now. the most important thing is the catastrophically small fps during the game. the feeling is that while walking, the value is about 20, but with each shot it drops to 0.

the character also moves extremely slowly, I never found the monster because I was tired of walking to it =) 

also, turns with the handle should either be made less sensitive, or removed altogether and come up with another application (for example, reloading weapons). sometimes, while walking (while I pressed the forward button), a person fired shots, although I did not press the firing button. 

overall, I liked the style and the idea, but It still need to work. I hope you will not abandon the project, I will monitor your progress. good luck with the development.

I like the idea a lot. I downloaded it and it shows in the system as Air Defense UA. It technically runs on physical hardware, but it’s super slow. So slow that it’s, unfortunately, unplayable. I really want to try it out though, so hopefully you can figure out what’s going on.
